Amores de Azeitão are small sweets made from egg whites, sugar and ground almonds, served in paper cases. Their mixture is shaped into irregular, peaked forms: the exterior is white or ivory, dry and faintly cracked, while the centre remains denser and visibly almond-rich.

They are neither macarons nor plain smooth meringues. Almond changes the weight, texture and flavour of the egg-white foam, giving each sweet a toasted character and a handmade silhouette that varies from piece to piece.

Ingredients
  • egg whites
  • sugar
  • ground almonds
Taste & texture

Sweet and light at first bite, with toasted almond and a centre denser than an ordinary meringue.

Variations

Some versions are topped with a whole almond; drying time and almond content also vary.

Where to try it

At Pastelaria Regional Cego in Vila Nogueira de Azeitão and occasionally at regional sweet shops across the Setúbal Peninsula.

Pairs well with

Espresso, tea or Moscatel de Setúbal.

History

The speciality is associated with Pastelaria Regional Cego, which Setúbal municipality documents as founded in 1901 in Vila Nogueira de Azeitão. Local memory collected by editorial sources credits Teresa Prata and her daughter Maria Albina with much of the shop's early confectionery; this genealogy should be read as family oral history, not independent proof that either woman invented the recipe. The municipality's 2020 report confirms that it produced a recipe video for Amores with O Cego, and the sweet appeared on the 2019 national nominee list for the Seven Wonders of Portuguese Sweets as a Territory Sweet.
