Sequilhos de Águeda are small dry cakes, oval or round, made with abundant eggs and yolks, sugar, flour and a little raising agent. The aerated batter is spooned onto a tray and baked until lightly golden, with a raised centre and shallow edges.
Once cool, the sequilhos are coated in thread-stage sugar syrup. As it dries, the sugar forms a thin whitish, crisp film over a yellow, light and porous crumb. They are neither Brazilian starch sequilhos nor butter biscuits, but belong to Portugal's family of small egg cakes.

Sweet, light and distinctly eggy, with a dry yet delicate crumb and a thin sugar shell that dissolves on the bite.
Shape depends on the spoon and may be oval, round or slightly irregular. The glaze ranges from almost transparent to white and crystalline. The documented yolk-rich formula and sugar finish distinguish it from Sequilhos de Arganil.

Águeda Municipality includes sequilhos among the municipality's traditional recipes handed down through generations, together with Pastéis de Águeda, fuzis and festive cakes. In 2015 the municipality invited local producers to help develop this confectionery as part of Águeda's identity.
Continuity received new momentum through CERCIAG's Receita Maria Leonor project. Since 2018 the initiative has made sequilhos and other local sweets from recipes acquired from a recognized Águeda confectioner, combining culinary preservation with professional inclusion for people with disabilities.
