Queijadas de Portalegre are small round cakes, usually fluted, about seven centimetres across and three high. A very thin case—flour, egg, butter and lard—holds a soft filling of requeijão, eggs, sugar, butter and a little flour. In the oven the top becomes unevenly golden, with more deeply caramelised edges and a moist, dense centre.
They are eaten by hand in two or three bites. The delicate shell gives way first, followed by the milky sweetness of the requeijão, enriched by egg yet lighter than many yolk-and-almond convent sweets. They are a popular Portalegre speciality and part of the broad family of Alentejo queijadas.

Sweet and milky, with a moist tender filling, caramelised surface and the contrast of a very thin, lightly crisp shell.
It belongs to the same family as the queijadas of Évora, Estremoz, Elvas and Vila Viçosa. Proportions shift from town to town and some variants replace requeijão with fresh sheep's cheese; that distinction should not be flattened into a single recipe.
Look for them in Portalegre's traditional pastry shops and at the Traditional and Convent Confectionery Fair in the Monastery of São Bernardo. Availability and producers vary, so check before visiting.
Espresso, black tea or an Alentejo fortified wine.
Portalegre Municipal Council includes queijadas among the city's popular-origin sweets, alongside boleimas, bolo finto and handmade sugared almonds. DGADR's official inventory of Traditional Portuguese Products explicitly identifies the Portalegre queijada as an Alentejo variant of requeijão queijadas. The tradition turns a fresh, perishable product familiar to mountain communities into a baked sweet of eggs and sugar that could be shared.
The sources consulted do not support assigning a specific date or convent to the Portalegre version. Its continuity is nonetheless visible: Portalegre's Traditional and Convent Confectionery Fair holds requeijão-queijada workshops, and in 2026 a Queijada de Portalegre won the local Best Traditional Sweet category.
