Bolo Folhado de Alvito has a verifiable public identity but very limited open technical documentation. The list of 140 nominated sweets fixes the name ‘Bolo Folhado’, the municipality of Alvito and its selection for Beja district; the earlier list of 420 candidates places it in the ‘Pastry Cake’ category. None of the sources reviewed publishes its shape, proportions or method.
The same initial selection separately lists ‘Bolo folhado com chila’ (layered cake with chila). That separation prevents assuming that the unqualified finalist contained chila. The image on this page is only an editorial visualisation of the layered-cake meaning suggested by the name, not a documentary photograph of the competition entry or proof that it used French puff pastry.
The specific flavour and texture of the Alvito finalist are not described in the sources reviewed.
‘Bolo folhado com chila’ was a separate Alvito entry and must not be merged into this identity without new evidence. Layered cakes also occur in other Alentejo localities and require their own research.
In Alvito, by asking at local pastry shops; current production and availability were not confirmed by the open sources.
No documented traditional pairing was found.
Alvito entered six sweets in the 2019 Seven Wonders of Portuguese Sweets: Bolo Folhado, Bolo Folhado com Chila, Fitas de Mel, Pastéis de Grão, Chocolate Tart and Sericaia. The national panel selected Bolo Folhado for the group of 140 candidates put to a public vote, making it one of Beja district's seven representatives.
That competition trail documents the sweet's existence and contemporary territorial association. It does not document authorship, age, convent provenance or family transmission. Until a recipe collection, municipal archive, technical testimony or producer publication emerges, those elements must remain open.
Limited documentation
The identity is documented, but its origin, composition or availability has limited sourcing.
