Rebuçados da Régua begin with sugar boiled with water and lemon peel to hard-crack stage. The hot mass is poured onto a greased surface, worked quickly, hand-cut into small pieces and individually wrapped in paper or cellophane twisted at both ends.
Without industrial moulds, the candies retain small differences in size, amber colour and shape.

Proportions and small additional aromas belong to each maker's know-how; some versions mention honey or herbs.

The women known as Rebuçadeiras da Régua sell these sweets at the railway station, river docks and fairs, becoming part of Peso da Régua's cultural identity. Municipal documentation records the trade at least from the 1940s and describes knowledge passed between generations of women.
