Queijada Ponta Delgada is a contemporary creation by the Colmeia Avenida confectionery, designed to bring São Miguel's food history together in a small tart. It has a shallow pale pastry shell with a wavy, hydrangea-inspired rim and a baked amber filling. Its published flavour composition combines Azorean cheese, pineapple, orange, cinnamon and doce de ovos egg custard.

It should not be confused with Queijadas de Vila Franca do Campo, which have a different tradition and formula. Nor is it an old convent recipe: it uses doce de ovos as a reference to Ponta Delgada's convent confectionery, but it is an identified Colmeia creation deliberately conceived as an edible portrait of the city and island.

Ingredients
  • pastry shell
  • Azorean cheese
  • Azorean pineapple
  • orange
  • cinnamon
  • doce de ovos egg custard
Taste & texture

Creamy and sweet-tart, with tropical fruit and citrus lifting the richness of cheese and yolks, followed by warm cinnamon.

Variations

This is an authored product with Colmeia's own formula rather than an open family of recipes. Its established name omits 'de', although English speakers and visitors also search for it as Ponta Delgada cheese tart.

Where to try it

At Colmeia Avenida in Ponta Delgada's Solmar Avenida Center. The complete formula belongs to the house; public sources identify the flavours, form and narrative but do not publish recipe proportions.

Pairs well with

Azorean black tea or espresso.

History

Colmeia Avenida opened in 2008 and developed a range of sweets around Azorean ingredients and symbols. The house presents pineapple as an emblematic São Miguel crop, doce de ovos as convent memory, orange as a reminder of nineteenth-century Azorean exports to Britain, cheese for its regional importance and cinnamon through the Atlantic history of the Portuguese discoveries. The scalloped form evokes the hydrangeas of São Miguel's landscape. Queijada Ponta Delgada was nominated for Portugal's Seven Wonders of Sweets in 2019 and represented the Azores in the Confectionery category of the Seven Wonders of New Gastronomy in 2021.
