The Magalhães is an individual cake shaped like a small boat, pointed at both ends and open through the centre. A golden puff-pastry rim surrounds a moist brown filling led by walnut and honey. The contrast between the light laminated shell and concentrated centre gives it an immediately recognisable appearance and flavour.
The complete recipe remains associated with Pastelaria Liz, but the producer's presentations and regional coverage clearly identify walnut and honey as its defining flavours. Its form evokes the old boats of the River Lima, turning a local reference into a contemporary Ponte da Barca sweet.
- puff pastry
- walnuts
- honey
Crisp, buttery laminated pastry with a moist, honeyed centre and an emphatic walnut flavour.
The speciality is tied to Pastelaria Liz's recipe; no independent traditional variants are documented.

Espresso, black tea or a small glass of sweet Vinho Verde.
Alfredo Pimenta created the Magalhães at Pastelaria Liz around 2011, when the business marked 35 years of activity. Its name honours Ferdinand Magellan, whom local memory associates with Ponte da Barca, while the form recalls the boats that once travelled the Lima. Regional media already presented it in 2015 as a recent creation of the pastry shop and, in 2021, as the town's new signature sweet. It is therefore a documented modern local speciality, not an old convent recipe.
