Caramujos de Luso are small sweets of egg yolk, sugar and water enclosed in white wafer sheets moulded as marine forms. Scallop shells, whelks and sea snails have fine ridges and differing silhouettes, though all contain the same moist, intensely sweet golden filling.
The wafer is dry, fragile and nearly neutral; it snaps when bitten and reveals the soft yolk paste. The name comes entirely from the marine moulds and not from any animal ingredient.

Mealhada's official ‘4 Wonders of the Table’ guide records an oral tradition in which caramujos and cavacas reached Luso more than a century ago through Dona Celeste's god-aunt, a nun at Lorvão Monastery. Dona Celeste is said to have begun making and selling the sweets in Coimbra, after which the recipe passed orally between generations.
In Luso, the Semedo & Bonito grocery preserves the speciality. In 2019, Mealhada municipality entered Caramujos de Luso in the Seven Wonders of Portuguese Sweets competition in the Territorial Sweet category.
