Boroa de Abóbora de Arouca is a small round sweet broa. Its handmade surface is rough yet soft, with a toasted yellow exterior. Broken open, it reveals a moist yellow crumb that can approach orange depending on the pumpkin variety and ripeness.
It is neither maize bread nor a slice of pumpkin cake: the compact rustic individual broa is its reference form. The family recipe turns the village's abundant pumpkin crop into a contemporary speciality tied to the Freita Mountains landscape.
- locally grown pumpkin
- sweet-broa ingredients from an unpublished family recipe
Gentle cooked-pumpkin sweetness, a moist soft crumb and a lightly firmer toasted crust.
The interior ranges from yellow to orange with the pumpkin. The same maker produces chestnut and carrot boroas, but these are distinct from the original pumpkin creation.

Coffee, black tea or a lighter Portuguese dessert wine.
The speciality began in 2011 in Souto Redondo, on the northern slope of the Freita Mountains. Vítor Fernandes and his family drew on an old family recipe and locally grown pumpkins to create Boroas & Companhia, now a recognised artisanal production unit. Villagers also contributed to the laborious peeling and cooking of the pumpkins.
After winning Portuguese awards and Great Taste distinctions, the broa reached the 140 public-vote finalists of the Seven Wonders of Portuguese Sweets in 2019 as one of Aveiro district's seven representatives. Arouca Municipality described it as a creation joining innovation and tradition.
