Bolinhos de Trás-da-Matriz are small individual cakes associated with Ponte de Lima. Portugal's national Seven Wonders of Portuguese Sweets list recorded them in 2019 in the pastry-cake category, and a report on the district selection, drawing on a municipal statement, included them among the five sweets from Ponte de Lima chosen for the next round.

The only detailed public formula found is a contemporary promotional adaptation: eggs, milk, olive oil, sugar, orange zest, flour and raising agent, divided among individual moulds. That recipe adds hazelnut spread after baking; there is not enough documentary evidence to claim that this finish belongs to the earlier local version.

Ingredients
  • eggs
  • milk
  • olive oil
  • sugar
  • orange zest
  • flour
  • raising agent
Taste & texture

The documented modern recipe produces a simple, moderately sweet cake with a soft crumb, orange aroma and the note of olive oil. No independent sensory description of the historical version was found.

Variations

Nutella's published adaptation adds hazelnut spread after baking. It should be understood as a modern promotional version, not as evidence of the traditional formula.

Where to try it

The cake's identity is documented in Ponte de Lima, but the consulted sources do not confirm a current outlet or availability. Check directly with local pastry shops before making a special journey.

Pairs well with

Coffee, tea or milk, as an editorially suggested pairing for a simple snack cake.

History

A 2019 local-history article credits Vilar with introducing Castanholas and Bolinhos de Trás-da-Matriz in 1906. This is the only specific chronology found, and it could not be confirmed in an independent primary or institutional source; the date and maker are therefore preserved here as a published attribution, not as conclusively established fact.

The 2019 competition provides a firmer documentary marker: it confirms the name, Ponte de Lima and classification as a pastry cake. The consulted sources do not verifiably explain the origin of the name Trás-da-Matriz or publish Vilar's historical recipe.
