Portuguese Oven-Baked Apples
This home dessert keeps the apples whole and slowly bakes them with sugar, cinnamon and orange. Scoring the skin prevents uncontrolled splitting and lets the flesh soften without the fruit collapsing.

Difficulty
Ingredients
- 6 Apples
- 6 tsp Sugar
- 2 Cinnamon sticks
- 100 ml Orange juice
- 100 ml Water
Method
Heat the oven to 160°C / 320°F. Wash and dry the apples, then remove the cores without cutting excessively through the bases.
Score a shallow line around the skin of each apple. Stand them in a baking dish and spoon one teaspoon of sugar into each cavity.
Add the water, orange juice and cinnamon sticks to the dish. Spoon a little liquid over the apples.
Bake for 30–40 minutes, basting twice with the juices, until the skins wrinkle and the flesh is tender.
Serve hot, warm or cold with the syrup formed in the dish.
