In the usage documented by historical research published by Vila Real municipality, Viuvinhas are Pastéis de Santa Clara: very thin pastry crescents associated with the former Poor Clare convent's confectionery. A domestic recipe published by Maria Odette Cortes Valente directs the cook to stretch the dough until paper-thin, layer two buttered circles, fill them with an almond-and-egg confection, fold them and turn the tips upward like a frill. After a quick bake, they are dusted with icing sugar.
This smooth-edged piece is not the serrated Crista de Galo described by DGADR. The terminology is nevertheless inconsistent: DGADR includes “Viuvinhas” among the alternative names for Cristas de Galo, whereas municipal sources and historical advertisements distinguish Pastéis de Santa Clara/Viuvinhas from Pastéis de Toucinho/Cristas de Galo. The catalogue retains both identities to represent that local historical distinction and explains the conflict on both pages.
This page's image follows the smooth crescent, thin layers, raised tips and icing sugar in the published recipe. It is an editorial reconstruction, not a photograph of a historical example or an identified commercial formula.

The published recipe documents very thin buttered pastry and a filling of sugar, almonds, yolks, whites and cinnamon. The reviewed sources provide no tasting assessment; precise claims about crispness, moisture or intensity are culinary inferences rather than historical evidence.
“Viuvinhas” has at least two published meanings: Pastéis de Santa Clara/layered pastries in municipal historiography and an alternative name for Cristas de Galo in DGADR. The domestic recipe presented here documents the former; it should not be treated as a Crista de Galo formula or as Pastelaria Gomes's commercial recipe.
Pastelaria Gomes is historically linked to Viuvinhas and remains active in Vila Real, but current availability of this smooth-edged piece is unconfirmed. Ask directly for a Pastel de Santa Clara or Viuvinha and verify its form, because the name may also identify a Crista de Galo.
Not documented in the sources reviewed.
Municipal research documents the confectionery made in quantity at Vila Real's Convent of Santa Clara and separately lists “Vila Real pastries or lard pastries”—now pastéis de toucinho-do-céu or Cristas de Galo—and “Santa Clara pastries or viuvinhas”. Pastelaria Gomes advertising reinforces the distinction: in 1933 the shop advertised “layered pastries (viuvinhas)” and “pastéis de toucinho do Céu” as separate specialities.
Earlier usage was not completely stable. An advertisement by Maria d'Annunciação Teixeira Motta, published in Vila Real in 1893, priced “layered pastries”, “lard pastries” and “viuvinhas” separately. It does not describe the three pieces, so the equivalence attested in 1933 cannot safely be projected backwards to 1893.
In its history of Pastelaria Gomes, the municipality credits Maria da Conceição Sousa Magalhães Gomes (1899–1979), who directed pastry production and outside catering, with helping establish specialities central to the shop's success, including viuvinhas, pastéis de toucinho-do-céu, meat bread and covilhetes. This documents a twentieth-century commercial role, not creation of the convent sweet. The Council of Europe still identifies the pastry shop as a member of the Historic Cafés Route, but the current sources reviewed do not confirm that this specific form remains on sale.
