Rosquilhos Tortos are brown, sweet, rough-surfaced cakes made only with eggs, flour and sugar. They form broad irregular rings with a central hole, recalling the millstones of traditional mills.

Sold individually, they have a rustic handmade appearance: every ring is slightly different, with folds and oven marks across its crust.

Ingredients
  • eggs
  • wheat flour
  • sugar
Taste & texture

Simple egg-and-wheat sweetness with a toasted crust and firm crumb.

Variations

Also called Galhofas; their irregular shape varies from piece to piece.

Where to try it

At fairs, pilgrimages and traditional shops around Marco de Canaveses.

Pairs well with

Coffee, tea or the region's red Vinho Verde.

History

DGADR records them as a traditional Marco de Canaveses sweet, formerly consumed mainly at pilgrimages and fairs, and relates their shape to millstones. A regional strategic plan for Baixo Tâmega products also includes Rosquilhos Tortos among Marco's emblematic sweets and confirms their connection with festivals and pilgrimages. The millstone comparison is a documented visual interpretation, not a historically dated origin.
