Império begins with the round laminated form of pastel de nata but enriches its custard with coconut. A small crown or rosette of sweet egg cream sits on the surface, dusted with cinnamon and finished with half a preserved cherry.
The result is visually more elaborate than a nata: toasted laminated rim, raised yellow centre and a red accent on top. Coconut gives the filling more texture and clearly separates it from an ordinary pastel de nata.

- Half a preserved cherry
Creamy and yolk-rich, with chewy coconut, warm cinnamon, sugary fruit and a crisp laminated rim.
Some shops literally begin with a nata base and vary the coconut, sweet egg cream and coating. Half a cherry is the reference finish.
Look in traditional in-house pastry shops, identifying it by its raised sweet-egg-cream centre and cherry. Current availability is irregular.
Espresso or black tea.
Fabrico Próprio classifies it as a particular pastel de nata variant and records that some shops use the same base before adding its characteristic finishes. No reliable documentation found establishes an inventor, date, originating region or connection to a bakery named Império.
The name should therefore be treated as the cake’s designation rather than evidence of authorship by a particular shop. This entry preserves only the published construction: coconut custard, sweet egg cream, cinnamon and cherry.
