Régua’s Ferreirinhas are contemporary bonbons created by Maria do Céu Pires in Peso da Régua. Regional sources identify raisins, pine nuts, almonds, gila preserve and Port; No Ponto’s account of the creator adds a thin chocolate coating.

The Douro Alliance guide documents their presentation in small grafting baskets decorated with raffia. That packaging evokes vineyard work but is not a formula: none of the sources reviewed publishes proportions, filling preparation, shaping or a coating method.

Ingredients
  • Gila squash preserve
  • Raisins
  • Almond
  • Pine nuts
  • Port
  • Chocolate
Taste & texture

A thin chocolate coating and a filling of gila, nuts, raisins and Port. The regional guide notes that resting for a day or two makes the Port and raisins more pronounced.

Variations

The sources reviewed repeat the same identity of gila, raisins, almonds, pine nuts, Port and chocolate but publish neither variants nor proportions. A generic bonbon recipe must not be presented as a Ferreirinha.

Where to try it

Historical sources direct readers to Doces do Céu in Peso da Régua, but current retail availability could not be confirmed. Do not make a dedicated trip without contacting the producer first.

Pairs well with

A glass of tawny Port, espresso or black tea.

History

Maria do Céu Pires created the Ferreirinha in Peso da Régua as a tribute to Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira—the Douro entrepreneur known as Ferreirinha—and, through her, to Douro women. The exact date remains unknown: a 2012 text attributing its information to the municipality said the sweet had been made for five years, while No Ponto wrote in 2015 that it had been invented twenty years earlier. Those chronologies are incompatible, so only its classification as a contemporary creation is secure.

The Douro Alliance guide recorded the ingredients, presentation and recommendation to wait a day or two for the Port and raisins to deepen in flavour. In 2019, Peso da Régua’s Ferreirinhas entered the Seven Sweet Wonders of Portugal and passed the Vila Real district phase. The Doces do Céu video associated with that candidature is the latest producer-specific public evidence cited here; it does not confirm current retail availability.
