Fatias do Freixo are rectangular pieces measuring roughly 10 by 5 by 5 centimetres, made from eggs, sugar, flour and water. Their interior is exceptionally soft, bright yellow and moist; a thin brown crust covers part of the surface while sugar syrup keeps the slices glossy.

The exact recipe and method remain a secret of the family at Casa dos Lenteirões. Sold by weight, the slices are distinguished by the contrast between their soaked, sponge-like centre and darker top.

Ingredients
  • eggs
  • sugar
  • wheat flour
  • water
Taste & texture

Very sweet, intensely egg-rich and juicy, with a delicate caramelised note from the crust.

Variations

The family recipe is unique; pieces retain their rectangular form and combination of yellow centre with brown crust.

Where to try it

At Casa dos Lenteirões in Freixo, Marco de Canaveses; sold by weight throughout the year.

Pairs well with

Espresso, black tea or a sweet Vinho Verde.

History

Heritage sources present the possible 17th-century convent origin as tradition rather than a documentary certainty. Casa dos Lenteirões' verifiable chronology begins in 1819, during João VI's reign, and the house itself says it has produced the slices since that year. DGADR and the Romanesque Route also record the tradition that King Luís required them at his banquets.
