Tarecos are a Tabuaço sweet classified as 'Dry Biscuits and Cakes' in the national list for Portugal's 2019 Seven Sweet Wonders. The Association of Municipalities of the Southern Douro Valley had already included them among the municipality's traditional confectionery highlights in 2009, while the 2025 Gastronomic Weekends confectionery inventory again lists them under Tabuaço. These sources establish the name, territory and general category.
None of the open sources consulted publishes the historic recipe, proportions, a technical description of the shape or a photograph identified as a reference example. This page neither imports ingredients from the unrelated Brazilian biscuit of the same name nor turns its illustration into material evidence.
The image is an editorial interpretation of small handmade dry cakes. It is not a photograph of an authenticated Tareco de Tabuaço and does not establish a compulsory shape, finish or ingredient set.
Sources classify them as dry biscuits or cakes; their specific flavour, aroma and texture should be confirmed with a producer or custodian of the local recipe.
No standardised variants are documented. “Tareco” is also the name of a biscuit from northeastern Brazil, but there is no basis for treating that recipe as a variant of the Tabuaço sweet.
Look for them in Tabuaço and confirm availability in advance with the tourist office or restaurants devoted to local cooking; this is a rare speciality rather than a guaranteed everyday bakery item.
The municipal association suggests Port-style wine, aguardente or jeropiga for Tabuaço confectionery generally; it does not document a pairing specific to Tarecos.
In 2019, a local report on the Municipal Council's competition entry stated that Tarecos, Manjar Conventual, Pudim de Ovos and Aletria Doce came from an old recipe collection belonging to the monks of São Pedro das Águias Convent that the municipality had 'recovered'. All four reached the list of 420 Seven Wonders candidates. The national list confirms the names and places Tarecos in the dry biscuits and cakes category.
The claimed convent source must nevertheless be read as a municipal attribution: this review found no manuscript, transcription, date, archive reference or historical study with which to verify the documentary chain. The association with Tabuaço predates the 2019 competition and continues in later inventories, but the origin, creation date and transmission of the recipe remain unproven.
