Charutos de Amêndoa de Arouca are small cylinders of thin wafer wrapped around a moist orange filling of egg yolk, sugar and almond. The white surface is generously coated with sugar, while the open ends reveal the convent-style centre.
Each piece is short and irregular, with visible folds in the wafer and a delicate outer texture. The first bite breaks through the dry sugared sheet before reaching the dense, soft filling.

Very sweet, contrasting dry sugared wafer with a creamy egg-yolk and almond filling.
Roll thickness, exterior sugar and almond proportion vary by producer; the white cylinder and yellow-orange filling are distinctive.
At traditional and convent-sweet shops in Arouca, sold individually or in mixed boxes.
Espresso, black tea or a small glass of fortified wine.
They belong to the collection of convent sweets preserved in Arouca and are associated with the town's former women's monastery. Their cigar shape supplied an immediate visual name; the filling retains the yolk, sugar and almond combination characteristic of much Portuguese monastic confectionery.
